Will Cam Newton's said "ego" hinder his chances at NFL success?

Many have been exploring this question for the past couple of weeks. The things he has said in press conferences, combine interviews, etc. have made people skeptical of his "ego."

I read on a forum site (AuburnSports.com) that the national media has been taking Cam's comments out of context. Cam was quoted as saying, "I want to be an icon." While I don't initially find this statement to be obnoxious or cocky, it does make me at least think a little bit harder about the way that Cam carries himself. On the same forum, another member posed the question, "Was his ego a problem in 2010 as he led Auburn to become the National Champions?" My response to this question would be, in a college atmosphere, players have coaches that are much older than them and are an obvious figure of authority in their life. Chizik and his staff would not let any player get a big head and show out beyond reason. I firmly believe that had Cam's ego gotten out of check this past fall, he would've been pulled out of the game despite his enormous talent.

So, can we accurately judge how Cam's persona is likely to hold up in the future?
My answer, NO. At this point in time, there is no way to tell how a kid who has never experienced the type of freedom he is about to be subject to will handle it.
